Biking trip to Vanhalinna in Lieto 26th October

Go for a biking trip around Vanhalinna in Lieto with APK on Saturday 26 October! The idea of the trip is to cycle at a chill pace to the Vanhalinna and stop there to eat snacks and climb the castle hill to explore the autumn views of the Aurajoki Valley, after which we cycle back to Turku. The length of the route is about 30 km, and in addition to asphalt roads, it has many gravel road sections. You can familiarise yourself with the route here: https://visitturku.fi/turun-seudun-pyorailyreitti-10—vanhalinnan-lenkki (only in Finnish). Note that we don’t follow the route completely but do it slightly differently. The route is classified as easy/medium difficulty.

We start the trip by meeting in the parking lot in Halistenkoski (Valkkimyllynkuja) at 10 am, from where we will head towards Vanhalinna together. Pack tasty snacks and remember to take a water bottle with you. A bicycle helmet is mandatory equipment for every participant on the trip! Check that your bike is in good condition before the trip and remember to pump up the tires before the trip. You can participate in the trip with any kind of bicycle that you know you can ride both on asphalt as well as on gravel roads, on plains and hills. A city bike without gears or a road bike with thin tires is not, however, recommended. Dress according to the weather in clothes that are comfortable for cycling. It can be good to take an extra jacket for the snack break. If you have forgotten the traffic rules for cyclists, it’s a good idea to review them before the trip for example here: https://www.liikenneturva.fi/en/road-safety/cycling/.There is a weather reservation for the bike trip.

The trip is free, but to participate you must have paid the APK membership fee. There is no registration form for the trip. Participating in the trip is at your own risk, APK does not insure its members.

Hike to Kurjenrahka 4.-6.10.

Hey!

APK will go hiking to Kurjenrahka national park during the weekend 4-6.10. (Fri-Sun). There are large swamps, some lakes, and forest in Kurjenrahka. Come and enjoy the beautiful autumn nature with us! The trip is free, but participants need to buy their own food and bus tickets.

We will leave from Kauppatori platform E3 on Friday the 4th at 16.55, with Föli bus number 21. We will hop off the bus at “Tortinmäentie” bus stop. Please be at the bus stop in good time!

On Friday we will walk about 5 km and spend the night at the Töykkälä laavu or nearby Töykkälä rental hut. On Saturday we will walk about 10 km from the shore of Lake Savojärvi along the Pukkipalo trail and spend the night at Lake Lakjärvi. On Sunday we will walk about 10 km along the Pukkipalo route to the bus stop called “Kurjenrahkan kansallispuisto”, from where a Föli bus departs back to Turku market square.

There is no place to get water on our route, or at our camp on Friday (except maybe swamp water, which you can drink at your own risk, prefarably after heating or filtering wth a water fliter), so we recommend taking a lot of water with you. On Saturday there will be a place to get water after 3 kilometers of walking. There is also a place for water near our second camp, but not at the camp, so water will need to be carried from there.

Participants will be divided into food groups before the hike, and the food groups will plan and buy their own food. We will send an example menu for the hike, that can bve used for inspiration.

Frost down to -5 is not impossible (check the weather forecast!), so take enough warm clothes with you on the hike. It’s good to have some different clothes for sleeping than for hiking, because sweaty clothes later become cold from the moisture.

APK has some gear that can be borrowed for the trip (place in a tent, sleeping bag, sleeping mat, trangia camping cooker). Let us know if you need something!

Sign up here (latest on Sunday 29th of September!): https://forms.office.com/e/CTmB1tVRtU

Camping trip to Nötö island from 17th to 19th of May 2024

We will make a two-night trip to Nötö island, archipelago of Turku. During the trip, we will stay at the camping site next to the sea and sleep in tents or hammocks for both nights. The camping site has an outdoor toilet, drinking water, and a small shelter with a place to cook food. During the days we will walk around the island and nature paths. You can also swim in the sea if you wish. As a heads up, there are venomous snakes and ticks on the island. Nothing to be too scared about, but it’s good to wear long trousers and socks and closed-toe shoes. In the evenings it’s good to check your body if you have ticks. The APK has some camping equipment available for loan for the trip. Please note that if you need to borrow a tent, there will probably not be enough for everyone to borrow their own tent.

Departure for the trip will be from the bus station platform 3, on Friday 17th of May at 16.10 with bus number 903. Please arrive on time at the departure point. The bus arrives at the ferry harbor of Pärnäinen at 18.00 and it is a short walk to the ferry which leaves at 18.15. You can also arrive with your own car if you wish. In this case, we will meet at Saaristotie 5861, 21670 Pärnäinen at 18:00. The ferry arrives at Nötö island at 20.15. From there it is a 2km walk to the camping site. On Sunday 19th the ferry leaves from Nötö around 13.30-14 and arrives at the ferry harbor of Pärnäinen at 17.00. The bus to Turku will leave at 18.15 and arrive at the bus station at 20.15. The bus fare is around 6e one way for students and is not included in the trip payment. The ferry is free. The ferry has an indoor lounge, toilets, and a small café.

It is also possible to participate in the trip only on Sat-Sun, in which case you have to arrive in Nötö independently. On Saturday, the ferry runs from Pärnäis to Nötö at 13:30, and will arrive in Nötö at 15:30. In this case, the excursion participation fee is half (17 euros for members, 22 euros for non-members) of the entire participation fee.

Participation costs 35 € for APK members, for others 45 €. You can also become a member when registering or on the spot. Please note that the bus fare to and from the ferry harbor costs about 12e in total for students (non-students 24e). The participation fee for the excursion includes the fee for the camping site, a small snack on Friday evening, breakfast, lunch, and dinner on Saturday, and breakfast and lunch on Sunday. If you cancel your participation before the 15th of May, we will not charge the participation fee. For cancellations after 15 May, we will charge the fee even though you don’t show up. You can also bring your own snacks. There is a small grocery store on the island, and it should be open on Saturday 11-14.

Sign up here: https://forms.office.com/e/eMBzeYSkKD.  Registration closes on Wednesday 15th May at 18.00.
