Location: Berghamn, Turku outer archipelago
Price: The bus costs students approx. 6e/way (non students approx. 12e/one way) The ferry is free. Food is self-paid.

Academic scout guild and Hydepakki are arranging a two-night trip to Berghamn Island in the Turku outer archipelago on 23-25.5.2025. We will spend both nights by the sea in tents or hammocks. The island is quite small, but during the day we can walk around the island and visit the Fisherman’s Farm Museum and the old fort. There will also be time for relaxation and spending time together.

Meals are arranged so that we divide the participants into cooking groups of 2-4 people. The groups plan, buy and cook the food together. We will announce the cooking groups in the Whatsapp group of the trip. If you want to cook only for yourself you need to have your own cooker. APK has trangias to lend to the cooking groups and also other hiking equipment to borrow for the trip. Please note that if you need to borrow a tent, there is probably not enough for everyone to borrow their own tent. If there are more people who need to borrow equipment than we have equipment, we will distribute them in the order of registration. Hiking equipment must be picked up from Halinen one night between 20.-22.5. The exact date and address will be announced later. Hiking equipment can also be rented from Scandinavian Outdoor and Partioaitta.

The trip departs from Turku bus station, platform no. 3, on Friday at 16.10 on bus number 903M. Please arrive on time at the departure point. The bus arrives at the Pärnäinen ferry port at 18.00, from where it is a short walk to the ferry. The ferry has indoor facilities, toilets and a small café. You can also arrive by car/ride if you prefer. In that case, we will meet at Saaristotie 5861, 21670 Pärnäinen at 18.00. The ferry departs at 18.15 and arrives in Berghamn at approximately 19.15. The walking distance to the camping site is approximately 1 km. On Sunday, the ferry from Berghamn to Pärnäinen departs at 15-16 and arrives at the ferry port at 17.00. The bus to Turku from next to the port departs at 18.20 and arrives at the bus station at 20.15.

More info

There are outside toilets, a fireplace and a water tap at the island. The quality of the water from the tap has not been tested, but we have a water filter with us that everyone may use. There is also a little shop on the island where they sell bottled water. As a heads up, there are venomous snakes and ticks on the island. Nothing to be too scared about, but it’s good to wear long trousers and socks and closed-toe shoes. In the evenings it’s good to check your body if you have ticks.

Packing list

  • Backpack + rain cover for backpack or dry bags for your belongings inside the backpack
  • Your retkipassi (trip/trekking pass), if you have one. If you do not already have one, you can ask the organizers for one on the trip.
  • Warm and weatherproof clothing and a change of clothes. We recommend long trousers and socks to take with you due to ticks.
  • Plate, fork, knife and mug
  • Water bottle filled. There is a water point on the island where you can refill your water later.
  • Sitting pad
  • Knife in sheath and sausage stick if you have one at home
  • Matches
  • A sleeping pad, you can also ask APK to lend you a pad.
  • Sleeping bag, you can also ask APK for a sleeping bag to borrow.

  • Lighter shoes e.g. crocs (if you want)

Hydepakki + APK crusade to Nuuksio 7.3.-9.3.

Hey you adventure-seeking hiker! Have you fallen into despair due to the lack of hikes during the winter and has your life lost all meaning? Mach dir keine Sorgen, Mitwanderer! Hydepakki together with Turku’s Academic Scout Guild ASG or APK in Finnish, is hosting a traditional Nuuksio weekend hike on 7.3.-9.3.2025. The hike will be filled with fun adventures, breathtaking views and never before seen land navigation performances. By joining you will also get the unique chance to get to know our “foreign” compatriots. The hike is suited for both experienced and beginner hikers and equipment like tents, sleepingbags and trangias can be conveniently from Hydepakki. The 25 most adventurous hikers will fit in.

Schedule:
Departure from Espoon keskus 7.3 at 16:00
Nuuksio 7.3.-9.3!!!!
Arrival to Espoon keskus 9.3 at 16:33

What you need to pack:

  • Backpack (large enough)
  • A good winter jacket
  • Woolen layer or similar
  • Woolen sweater, fleece or similar warm sweater. The best would be two different sweaters of different warmness levels.
  • Waterproof winter trousers
  • Warm beanie
  • Warm gloves (take two pairs if it is very cold weather). It is often a good idea to have thinner gloves for walking and a thicker pair to put over them if cold.
  • Scarf
  • Woolen socks, multiple pairs
  • Multiple layers of clothes for the case of one layer becoming wet
  • Boots or another type of warm shoes with high stem (high stem is very important because of the snow). You should have enough space for the woolen socks in your shoes!
  • Cutlery (plate, mug, fork, spoon, knife)
  • Bottles for water (a thermos bottle is good, because otherwise water freezes). Please also have enough water. Water can also be melted from snow (if there is some) or boiled from lake water.
  • Personal hygiene stuff and medicine, and for example, plasters
  • Toilet paper
  • Headlamp or a good flashlight, + batteries for the lamp
  • A well-insulated sleeping pad (R-value at least 4) and a warm sleeping bag (comfort at least -5)
  • Matches
  • Insulated sitting pad
  • Tent and/or trangia, spirit or winter gas (if you promised to bring them in the signup form)
  • Snacks (for example, chocolate or nuts)

Not mandatory but useful:

  • Cell phone back-up power source
  • Dish brush/sponge
  • Compass
  • Map
  • Knife
  • Crocs or other light shoes for camp
  • Hand sanitizer

Make sure that you have proper clothes for hiking, breaks, rain and sleeping. When you are hiking you can usually manage with only a thin baselayer even during winter. Most important thing is avoiding sweating, you’ll get warm by moving around. You should always have a windproof jacket on top of your baselayer. For breaks and anytime where you spend extended periods of time still you will need at a minimum a thick wool shirt or a fleece and a warm winter jacket. When retiring into a sleeping bag it is important to have dry clothes on, you can use the same baselayer you use when moving if it’s dry or you can have separate clothes for sleeping. It is important to prepare for rain by bringing a waterproof jacket and trousers.

You can borrow equipment from Hydepakki, instructions from the link below ⬇️:
https://hydepakki.fi/en/varusteet/

For the trip you can either bring your own food or be content with the food that Hydepakki offers. Hydepakki will provide you with common food (breakfast, lunch and dinner) in exchange for a few quid. You will manage the hike with only the common food from Hydepakki but we recommend bringing some snacks for the hike and breaks (bread, chocolate, etc.). Please inform us on the form if you plan to eat Hydepakkis common food and if you have any dietary restrictions regarding the food.

The hike will set you back around 20€ if you plan to eat the common food + Turku-Espoo-Turku tickets and the HSL bus tickets. We will get a more accurate estimate of the price once people have signed up. Do remember that the APK membership fee must be paid for overnight trips.

You can travel conviniently from Turku to Espoo by train Turku-Espoo or by bus Turku-Espoo (Lommila).

Register for the hike by filling the signup form from the link below (the form will open on Saturday 22.2 at 18:00) only the fastest 25 people will make it to the hike⬇️:
